Head of Mission H.E. Amb. George M. Orina, leads an African Union Delegation to Maputo, Mozambique

On June 23, 2025, the Head of Mission H.E. Amb. George M. Orina, MBS, led an African Union Delegation to Maputo, Mozambique, as leader of delegation of AU’s Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) Sub-Committee on Refugees, Returnees, and Internally Displaced Persons.

The visit to Maputo was part of the Union’s Humanitarian Mission to assess and contribute to relief efforts by the Government of Mozambique to those who had been adversely impacted by the effects of Climate Change and acts of terrorism.

In his address to the gathered Mozambican Officials and other dignitaries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Maputo, H.E. Amb. George M. Orina highlighted the significance of African solidarity and fraternity in seeking to collectively address complex humanitarian challenges occasioned by acts of terror and climate-related disasters.

In particular, Amb. Orina noted the unfortunate events of 2023 that had manifested themselves through terrorism and environmental shocks in Cabo Delgado and other affected regions. These had led to devastating loss of lives and livelihoods, disproportionately affecting women, children and other vulnerable groups.

To this end, Amb. Orina informed that the AU – guided by the principles of Pan-Africanism, shared responsibility, and solidarity – had mobilised a humanitarian solidarity gesture amounting to USD 200,000. This contribution was aimed at augmenting the ongoing commendable efforts by the Government and its Partners in addressing the plight of those impacted.

The AU mission visited the Maritane Refuge Centre and the Corrane IDP Centres in Nampula. The AU Humanitarian Mission distributed food and non-food items to the IDPs in the Corrane IDP Centre.

The Ambassador also lauded His Excellency Daniel Francisco CHAPO, President of Republic of Mozambique and who is also the AU Champion for Disaster Risk Management, for his contributions to advancing the AU Policies and Programmes on Disaster Risk Management.
