Kenya and Ethiopia meet bilaterally ahead of RMFM Chairpersonship Handover

On Monday 28th February 2022 Hon. @CsChelugui, EGH Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour of the Republic of Kenya and Chair Regional Ministerial Forum for Migration held a consultative meeting with his Ethiopian Counterpart H.E. @MuferihatA, Minister of Labour and Skills of The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Present during the bilateral meeting was Amb. @JeanKamau, Ambassador/Permanent Representative, Embassy of the Republic of Kenya.

The Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration (RMFM) for East and Horn of Africa bringing together 11 States from East and Horn of Africa Region to jointly address labour migration policies, foster labour mobility and protect the fundamental human, labour, and social rights of migrant workers migrating within the continent and from Africa to EU, GCC Member States and other countries.

RMFM was launched at the Regional Ministerial Forum on “Harmonizing Labour Migration Policies in East and Horn of Africa – A United Approach on Safe, Regular and Humane Labour Migration” that was held in Nairobi, Kenya in January 2020. Participating States agreed to collaborate to strengthen labour migration governance in the East and Horn of Africa region by establishing a platform for experience sharing, consultation on issues, dialogue, and the review and implementation of recommendations.

It is intended to promote regional common approaches and social dialogue in the formulation and implementation of evidence-based, human rights and gender-sensitive harmonized labour migration policies.

The CS also informed of the planned 3rd Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration (RMFM) to be held on 1st April 2022, in Nairobi, Kenya where the Republic of Kenya will officially hand over chair to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
